Most people say Namecheap or Godaddy. Godaddy is quite cheap, but namecheap is known for it's reasonable prices and quality. I use both.

When I was new to buying domains, it was always GoDaddy I used. However, in the past year I started switching my domains over to NameCheap. I find their customer support is much more reliable and available than GoDaddy's is and I also think their control panel is easier to navigate.

Godaddy had a big hit after SOPA. But I think they'll recover in the upcoming months, if they keep their prices low.

Nevertheless, they've lost a lot of potential dollars. I'm sure the directors bit their lips when they saw the charts. Also, if you study economics, you'll see that when you degrade the reputation of a company, it's long term effects may not be visible, right away. If SOPA does pass, godaddy may have a permanent "bad name". That will, of course, hurt their business a little bit.

By far the best domain register is name.com.
There DNS is great and there pretty cheap.
